The forests in the Jari Valley conservation units cover approximately 2 million hectares and are of great importance in the preservation of Brazilian fauna and flora species. It is home to dozens of communities that work with forest products using sustainable techniques in agroextractivism.
The richness and complexity of the area's biodiversity motivates the Recreio community to search for cocoa across the entire length of the Valley, with the support of the Jari Foundation. With extensive experience in managing Brazil nuts, the Recreio community is responsible for pre-processing native cocoa beans. On the Paru River banks, around 400 people act as maintainers of natural resources, integrating economic sustenance with preservation.
